The Relationship among Adverse Childhood Experiences
CME/CE Expiration Date: 09/30/2019*
*The expiration date listed above is the last day CME/CE credit can be claimed for this specific presentation.

Description:

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study takes place at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. The ACE Study‘s high dropout rate was limited to those successfully losing weight, leading to the counterintuitive conclusion that obesity is protective ”sexually, physically and emotionally” and its removal is intolerable. Though obesity is an obvious physical sign and is easily measured, it may not be the sole problem to require treatment.

Objectives:

  • Understand how negative childhood experiences like bullying and sexual, physical, or mental abuse contribute to obesity later in life
  • Understand basic causes of obesity, not intermediary mechanisms like neuropeptides or McDonalds
  • Understand why (not how) obesity occurs and unconscious resistance to weight loss
