Tackling Weight Bias Inside and Outside the Clinic: Patty Nece is a noted patient advocate for those affected by obesity. Dr. Scott Kahan treated her for obesity. Together, they will share their story and discuss ways in which patients can advocate for themselves, especially when faced with stigma, bias, and discrimination. 

 

The Clinician Advocate: Dr. Ethan Lazarus and Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford are OMA’s representatives in the American Medical Association's House of Delegates and were heavily involved in the recent passage of the resolution regarding standards of care for patients with obesity. Together, they will discuss their work with the AMA and how you can engage in advocacy for the recognition and treatment of the disease of obesity.

Dr. Scott Kahan is the medical director of Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance and director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness in Washington, D.C. He serves on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the George Washington University Schools of Medicine and Public Health. He also serves on board of directors of American Board of Obesity Medicine and the Obesity Treatment Foundation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Patty Nece is a passionate advocate for the eradication of weight bias, sound obesity treatments, and insurance coverage for those treatments. She encourages change by sharing her personal experiences with life-long severe obesity. Patty is a member of the Board of Directors of the Obesity Action Coalition and Chairs OAC’s Weight Bias Task Force; a Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on Obesity; and a member of the American Psychological Association’s Obesity Guideline Development Panel.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Clinician Advocate

Dr. Lazarus is the Vice President of OMA and serves as our delegate in the AMA. He took center stage representing OMA during the 2013 AMA meeting and helped secure passage of the resolution recognizing obesity as a disease. More recently, he presented the first-ever obesity symposium with CME offered by OMA at the AMA 2017 annual meeting. He has practiced full-time obesity medicine in Greenwood Village, Colorado for 15 years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Stanford is an obesity medicine physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS). She completed her 3-year obesity medicine fellowship prior to joining the faculty. Dr. Stanford received her BS and MPH from Emory University as a MLK Scholar, her MD from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine as a Stoney Scholar, and her MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government as a Zuckerman Fellow.
